Frequently Asked Questions:

What is the best time of year to hunt Lord Derby Eland:

Prime time to hunt the Lord Derby Eland is during the cooler months of the year when the eland still have a nice thick matt of black mane hair – called the winter neck. This would generally be between the months of January and March when the temperatures are still relatively moderate. From the middle of March onward the chances of finding an eland with a nice black neck that will survive the tanning process decreases significantly.

What rifle should I bring?

Eland are incredible walkers, and very seldom offer a perfect shot opportunity! For this reason I generally recommend a 375 calibre rifle with a good variable power scope. There is often grass and other interfering vegetation that could easily deflect a lighter bullet, so I prefer a heavier calibre firearm.

When traveling with your own firearms, please be sure to pack your firearms and ammunition separately to you personal luggage!! No matter how you travel back home, this is how it is required to be declared in Europe as well as Cameroon. Also, please make sure to make use of quality lockable hard cases for your firearms as well as ammunition.

Also be sure to bring along a soft case for your firearm when transporting it in the hunting vehicle.

What distances will I be shooting?

Most of the shooting will be done within 200 yards, so no need for super fast and flat shooting firearms.

Be sure to zero your scope at your preferred distance before leaving home. We will be sure to check the scopes before we start hunting, just in case minor adjustments are necessary.

What clothing should I bring?

Typical olive green safari type clothing will serve you just fine. A nice warm sweater to cut the chill on the back of the vehicle in the mornings is a must. Long or short pants is up to you, but bear in mind the ever present tse the flies… Comfortable and well cushioned hunting boots are a must (the entire country is riddled with hard baked earthworm mounds that make walking feel as if one is walking on golf balls all day)!!

Please see recommended packing list for further guidelines.

What will the weather be like?

You will be hunting during the cooler part of the year, but the midday temperatures can still be quite high. In January one can expect temperatures of around 60f in the morning warming to the id 90s during the middle of the day. By March one can expect morning temperatures of around 75f and heating up to around 110F. This is also the dry time of year, so little to no rain to be expected until later on in March.

The below averages should give you an idea as to what to expect.

Will we have electricity in camp?
